The story of SM Games

By SM Games·February 10, 2026·5 min read

Every studio has an origin story, and ours is refreshingly simple: one person, one idea, and a platform that turned out to be the future. This is how SM Games — operating as S.MAKELA GAMES LTD — went from a single Roblox game to an independent studio with hundreds of millions of visits.

2017: it starts with a flight simulator

SM Games began in 2017 when our founder, Simon Mäkelä, started building games on Roblox. The first was Keyon Air Flight Simulator — a game where players become pilots and ground crew and run a working airline. It was the experience that taught us the craft, and it's still live today. That game is the reason everything else exists.

From one game to a portfolio

One game became several. Alongside Keyon Air, our catalog grew to include Water Park, Pass The Bomb and Prison Break — different genres, different audiences, but the same goal: make something people genuinely want to come back to. Across our experiences, players have visited our games more than 450 million times.

Why Roblox? Because it's where the players are. Roblox reaches well over a hundred million people every day, and it lets a small, independent team reach a global audience without a publisher. For a studio our size, that's everything.

A small team, on purpose

We're a tight crew of five. We've never tried to be the biggest studio — we've tried to be a focused one, where design, engineering, art, live ops and community all stay close together. Small teams can move fast, sweat details, and actually care about every update. That's the version of SM Games we want to be.

What we believe

The games we make have the power to shape the childhood memories of the next generation.

That sounds lofty until you remember what your own favorite childhood game meant to you. Millions of young players are spending real, formative time in experiences like ours. We don't take that lightly — it's exactly why we hold our work to the platform's standards and design for the audience that's actually there.

Where we're going

Today we do two things: build and grow our own games, and partner with brands and startups who want to do the same on Roblox. The mission hasn't changed since 2017 — we want to create the future of the gaming industry, one experience players remember at a time.
